Wasted Free Bowls

In a tight game, we skips often find the "Skip mat Play" is a Skip Game.  While we are at the mat, it seems each skip is trying to recovery from the opponent skips fine shot.   But not always.  If you are sitting shot or two and the opponent has not done a shot to change the head you may have a "Free Bowl".  Free to do what you feel is wise in Strategy.
Free bowls also are wasted when you have 2 or 3 shots and the last bowl to play (hammer, using a curling term). So often this bowl is simple wasted.  Why.. Do you know everything you need to know about that green or direction of green. If the jack was to be ditched at the out of bound limit.. would you be able to draw shot at that location.  Of course, Virgin green and unknown fall at the carpenter (board a long the ditch).
If you and the mate decide to pick up the jack and collect the points, why waste that bowl.  Bowl a imaginary short jack, bowl a next to ditch point, or even check a forehand or backhand you have not yet established.  ( First ends bowling)
Never waste a bowl or learning opportunity and remember defensive bowls means you pick the shot or roll to best instruct you or your team while not creating a dangerous situation or bowl opportunity.

  1. What happens when a skipper kicks a bowl in play

  2. Interesting Question. A lot has changed in bowls and Rules since this blog was written 8 years ago (2012) Rules usually apply depending upon if it is the opponents bowls or the player"s skip who interfered with their bowl in play. Last week I was playing another sport (Petanque) similar to Bowls (french version). A major difference is that we do not play each in turn but if the opponent still has the point after we have played then we continue to play until we win the point or no balls are left to play. This type of play (Petanque) can result in the team with the point having as many as 5 balls to play at the end. During a measurement (we can measure any time) I by accident kicked the opponent ball and the "Petanque rule here in Quebec" said the game was over although I still had 5 balls to play and could have made 5 more points.
I mention this because this action should be considered a serious incident and not simply mistake which is fixed by a agreement between skips whom are incline to say "Oh that is ok" or "No Problem". A common incident is when the bowl is about to go out of bounds or in the ditch because of the speed of roll and the player (skip usually) does not wait for it to stop or be dead; but redirect it or picks it up before it has stopped.
If the bowl in play is interfered with by the a team player it is automatic out of play and removed from the green. If the bowl is interfered with by the opponent the skip of the bowl has various options as per Rule 37.1.1.3 if the head was not distributed. a)replay the bowl or place the bowl where the skip feels it would have come to rest if not interfered with; or Rule 37.1.1.4 for a distributed head happened. Now the rule allows the skip (of the team playing) to replace the head as best he can and apply the same choice as the rule 37.1.1.3 or even be free to declare the end dead and to be restarted.
There are many things for the official to consider and although the skips might agree together the game official should be called and clearly explained what happen.
The skip doing the offence may have done this sort of thing before and the club or local association may have decided that in future that player will be given a warning and then removed from the game or even more serious actions.
I knew a skip who had a very bad temper and when losing an end with a good draw or takeout shot would not allow the opponent skip to come from the mat and see the head before he kicked the bowls away. On one occation he actually stopped the draw bowl and declared the shot as good. He would also argued with the chief official and was one year suspended for a season.
As I said... it seems like a small offense but might also be consider very serious. let the skips arrange the problem or call the official if there is a discussion. Any player can call "Official Please" and remember skips discussion can sometime cause a skip to lose his preformance with his reaction to the discussion.

  3. Also of interest is Rule 37.1.2 where the played bowls was interfered with after it had passed through the head.
